THE spellbinding fantasy of Aladdin is coming to Melbourne — complete with half a million Swarovski crystals.

Disney’s musical blockbuster will open at Her Majesty’s in April.

The show’s producer, Disney Theatrical Productions president Thomas Schumacher, said: “The more we work here (in Australia), the more we are impressed by a deep pool of musical theatre talent that only continues to grow.”

The show will be one of the largest productions mounted in Australia, boasting a cast of 37 with 337 costumes featuring 500,000 Swarovski crystals, and 30 tonnes of exotic “flying” scenery.

The stage version has been adapted from the popular Disney film and centuries-old folktales in One Thousand and One Nights. The score includes five songs from the Academy Award-winning soundtrack and more written for the stage.

After opening on Broadway two years ago, it has been seen by more than 3 million people and has spawned productions in Tokyo, Hamburg, London and Sydney. The principal cast in Sydney’s show will remain for Melbourne’s.

Michael James Scott is the Genie, Ainsley Melham is Aladdin, and Arielle Jacobs is Jasmine.
