Disney, IMAX forge five-picture deal

The Walt Disney Co. and IMAX Corp. have entered into a partnership that will see five Disney movies released in the IMAX format, starting with "A Christmas Carol" in 2009.

The adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel, directed by Robert Zemeckis, will star Jim Carrey and will be released in Disney's new Disney Digital 3D format.

The films will take advantage of IMAX's new digital projection system, which is being installed throughout all 320 IMAX locations worldwide.

"IMAX has a great track record and a loyal following when it comes to presenting epic entertainment, and we believe we have a unique and exciting slate of films that lend themselves to the IMAX format. With the introduction of IMAX's digital projection system, and the addition of new venues across the country, this is a great time to be working with IMAX to bring the ultimate moviegoing experience to audiences everywhere," Chuck Viane, president of distribution for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, said in a statement.
