Walt Disney World set to run Disney Princess Half Marathon

It’s still a race with hard-core runners, but there might just be a bit more glitter involved as the Disney Princess Half Marathon is set for Sunday.

In its ninth year, the Princess Half Marathon comes on the heels of Walt Disney World’s signature running event, the Disney Marathon, in January.

The 13.1-mile course will run through both the Magic Kingdom and Epcot and be part of three days of racing that includes the Enchanted 10K on Saturday, Princess 5K on Friday and children’s races on both Friday and Saturday.

Runners often design costumes to resemble their favorite Disney characters, within reason, though, as it is still a foot race. Along the path, Disney characters cheer them on, and many of the thousands of runners will stop for a quick photo. The 2016 races saw more than 37,000 participants.

As always, runners have a health and fitness expo set up at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex that runs from Thursday-Sunday.

The event, put on by runDisney, is the second of four events at Walt Disney World for 2017. Up next will be the Star Wars Half Marathon — The Dark Side, April 20-23 and the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Nov. 2-5.

Across the country, Disneyland has three half marathon weekends planned for the rest of 2017 and its own Star Wars themed one in early 2018.

Disneyland Paris will also host a half marathon this year in September.
